Session 7

Petaluma, CA is famous for many things. About 30 miles north of San Francisco, it was once the egg capital of the country, and hosted world arm-wrestling championships for more than 50 years. It’s the hometown of actress Winona Ryder, and it serves as the setting for Michael Ondaatje’s novel Divisadero.

I mostly think of it as the home of a couple of great friends and a gateway to all sorts of Northern California goodness—Bodega Bay and the Sonoma wine country.

One warm late-September afternoon Marco Morrone and I went to one of the town’s parks to record this session. It was impossible to see the place as anything but welcoming and gracious. Families gathered on the grass. Everyone seemed friendly. The atmosphere provided useful contrast to the selection Marco chose to read from a novel-in-progress. It involves family also, and guns and—well, you’ll just have to watch the reading.

Enjoy.
